Jeremy,
I'm writting to you as a fellow engineer (Marquette
University,1981- BS mechanical engineering) and present underemployed
professional clarinetist. First, get a copy of Michael Drapkin's
"Symphonic Repertoire for the Bass Clarinet". Next, get some basic CDs
with big bass clarinet solos such as:
Grof=E9, Grand Canyon Suite
Schuman, Symphony 3
Stravinsky, Rite of Spring
R. Strauss, Don Quixote
=46rank, Symphony in D minor

There's more but this would be a good start. For wind ensemble, listen to
the Hovaness Symphony 3 - big bass solo; Ross Lee Finney, Skating on the
Cheyanne (I think that's the name) - big and fast solo; Kulesha's Third
Chamber
Concerto (solo bass clarinet). That's a start.
Mainly, get a good bass or make sure the school bass is sealing
perfectly and you have a good mouthpiece and reed setup.

Dan
