Steve------I use those "pad saver" inserts (do you know them?) after
swabbing the bore with a pull-through swab. I sore the clarinet with the
pad savers kept in. Could this contribute to the moisture *retention* ???
I'd have thought it would cut back on moisture in the bore. Anyway,
that's been my procedure for the instrument which has recently shown the
"checking". Thanks.

Checks in the wood occur when there is more moisture on the inside (for
extended periods of time) than on the outside. When I "re-work" a
clarinet fresh from the store, I oil and wax the bore. In sealing the
bore, checks are often prevented. Keep in mind, a check is a crack
wanna-be.
