Ken,
You raise a good question. When we go to a concert is it to hear a
composer, hear a new piece, or hear a particular performer? I think it's a
mix of all but mainly to hear a particular performer.
When I look at a clarinet conference promo, I'm looking at who's
going to be playing, not what's going to be played (is that ever
mentioned?). Once at the conference I'm interested in what a particular
person is going to perform but would never consider it in my decision to go
or not to their recital.
Let me put out a question. Would you go to:

1) A recital by Larry Combs no matter what he's playing.

2) A recital by Larry Combs and he's playing music of questionable
quality (use your imagination. Dan L. he's doing all Solo de Concour
and theme and variation fantasy pieces).

3) A recital by an unknown quantity and their playing really good tunes
(Brahms, a world premiere, a new Franciax piece, etc)

So what would you choose? Or would you skip all three and go try
clarinet toys and gizmos in the exhibitors hall?

Dan
