Subj: Maker slogan "NE PLUS ULTRA"
Date: Fri, 19 Apr 1996 01:52:29 -0400

A high school student of mine has just inherited her grandfather's E-flat
clarinet. The bell is pretty scratched up, and the maker's name is no
longer legible. However, the city "PARIS" is clearly legible, as is the
phrase "NE PLUS ULTRA." I assume that's the maker's slogan.

The maker's name was laid out in a half circle, and ended with " & Cie."
(That much of it is legible.) The city "P A R I S" is written in a
straight line below that, and the phrase "NE PLUS ULTRA" in another
straight line below that.

Can anyone tell us who that maker was?

Please respond to my email address at Chapman, as I am not a subscriber
to klarinet.

Thanks very much.

Duff-
