My perspective is that Instrumentalist was not very selective in the
choice of their material for the anthology. I got the real impression
that they were interested in a big book, but necessarily an elegant
book.
They asked me to do a series of articles on repertoire something like
20 years ago and I did about 20 of them. Some were very good. Others
were just so-so. It is hard to keep writing gems. So when they
published mine, they were not selective at all. They just stuck all
the articles that I wrote for them into one volume and the result is
that there are extremes of quality.
