Concerning your comment about the Rabaud relative to the Messager, etc., I feel
that the Rabaud is one of the most useful pieces in the repertoire (Paris
Concervatory or otherwise), and here's the reason why. No matter how musical
you try to be with pieces such as the Messager, Jeanjean "Carnival of Venice,"
Weber 2nd concerto, or either set of Rossini variations (especially the
E-flat), all the judges are going to say is "Gee, you can sure play a lot of
notes!" To me, that is not the point of an audition, nor of music making in
general. Cal me a wimp when it comes to technique, but I feel the Rabaud is
just as it should be, and is one of those pieces that I will never tire of.
