I have a Bb clarinet with a pinned crack which is arguable one of the
nicest sounding clarinets I own. The repairman who pinned it left the
crack slightly visible, with the advice that I should keep an eye on it
to make sure it wasn't lengthening. One of my colleagues in the orchestra
who is a noted bassoon repair person told me there is some debate about
whether the crack "releases" some inherent tension in the wood, and
thus allows it to vibrate more freely or "naturally", and therefore
produce a better sound.

I know the physicists will tell us that the material doesn't affect the
tone quality, but...
