I recall a possibly apocryphal story of a doctoral candidate who failed
on the first try. Before the second try one member of the committee took
the student aside for a drink of whiskey. So did the advisor and the chair
of the department. The student passed the second try, but remembered nothing
about it.
Probably not the way to approach the exams. Having since served on such a
committee, I can assure you that most of the committee members wish the
student well; but, of course, they want the student to know that there
is still much to be learned ;)
