Do you have a good basic understanding of the clarinet's history? How
about acoustics? Have you memorized the overtone scale and it's
relationship to the clarinet's conical bore (all of the odd partials)?
How about the genesis and development of the clarinet's role and
repertoire in the context of each respective period (late baroque,
classical, romantic, and 20th century)? What were the landmark pieces
which propelled the clarinet into promninence, both orchestrally and as a
solo and chamber instrument? What distinction is generally agreed upon
as being the differentiating factor between the clarinet and its
predecessor, the chalumeau? Do you know all of the various names under
which the clarinet has come under the years? Clarino? Clarionet? Why
was it given the name that it has? (reference to clarion trumpet of
1700's). Who were its "champion" performers, and how did the virtuosi of
antiquity on the instrument influence the development of its role and
repertoire?
