Though I'm not very familiary with it, you could look into getting the crack
sealed with "carbon fiber reinforcement" or whatever it's called. I guess
what they do is squeeze the crack closed with bands of carbon, which are
very, very strong -- Albert Alphin in Needham, MA says that a crack sealed
with carbon will never open again. I don't know how valid that is, but you
could look into it if you don't like the gook-em you spoke of. Just a though
-- someone else might have more educated comments on carbon banding.
