Interesting to read about the shoe laces, butchers twine and rubber bands - all
of which I have tried at some time or other.

I've been using German mouthpieces for about the last 8 years and have
experimented with ligatures and tying the reed on. My overall feelings are that
the cord works for more reeds on more mouthpieces than a ligature (usually a
Rovner). I like a ligature for convenience but get more consistent results from
a cord.

I have a belief, completely unsupported by accurate measurement, that the
flatness of the mouthpiece table is a significant factor, i.e. the effect of a
ligature is less obvious on a truly flat table (if such a thing exists).

My understanding is that many (probably most) mouthpiece makers believe that a
slightly concave table produces better playing results. Flat mouthpiece tables
are evident on many fine British mouthpieces, e.g. B&H and Peter Eaton.
