From: Bill Fogle <bfogle@-----.EDU> Subj: Ron Monsen comments about "tone" Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 20:20:42 -0400
Another brief and profound note from the electronic pen of Ron Monsen!!!
What an interesting comment! It really does throw away the idea of a
player's "tone" as a single goal. This reminds me of Brymer's comment
that a player should invest in a mouthpiece flexible enough to *tend*
toward a sound wanted in Brahms or to *tend* toward another sound sought
for in Strauss. I'll be thinking about this as I play for days to come.
Thanks, Ron!

I have been reading this recent exchange with interest. I have a question
to ask; Should a clarinetist-musician performing a recital of let us say:
Sonata No. 2, Eb Major Brahms; Variations for Clarinet and Piano, Francaix;
Sonata Bb Major, Wanhall; and Sonatine Attique, Tomasi--perform this
recital using the same "tone" for this music? Quite a few different styles
and eras are covered. Just a bit of food for thought.
