I'm not qualified and/or arrogant enough to say what he/she SHOULD do.
Give me a four-year sabattical to properly prepare myself and I'd consider
using four different clarinets but that would be taking a didactic approach.
I think that one more admires a performer who gives a recital without
changing his/her clarinet or the reverberation of the room or the
amplification and still brings out the contrasting character of the pieces-
but in that case if is me playing then a critic would have to say (at best)
"his tone was more suited to Brahms than to Francaix" and I'd say "yes,
that's the choice I made when I selected my equipment, it's fair criticism
but my eyes were open"
