Bill,

"Checking", as it's called is common in wooden instruments. It is not
anything to worry about, but is something that you will want to keep
an eye on. If you have not oiled the wood lately, you may want to
consider it. Oiling helps reduce expansion and contraction of the
fibers. If I may be of any more help, please let me know.
