Dan, I agree...these passages really *are* a mystery. I do not believe that
Mozart wanted them slurred. Years ago, I used to think he meant these
passages as a prank. But I don't feel that way any more. (In fact,
personally I am convinced of this.) Generally, they *have* to be played
slurred, as a practical matter. Yet, I still am convinced Mozart did not
"forget" to slur them. I've finally concluded Mozart was writing "ideal
music" in these passages. He surely knew of the difficulty involved. I
think he simply felt, well, too bad, if it can't be played that way, fine...
