Ed,
Any wooden student clarinet for under $400 (in good playing condition)
is a good deal. Yamaha does make a very nice instrunent. Basically, in the
student instrument category, they are all similar except for some really
off-brands. All the big names make a decent instrument of approximately
the same quality. I have had students using lots of different horns and
very rarely have I come across one which was so bad that I really
suggested they buy another instrument. Go for it.
