How 'bout a science-type gal? Granted, I'm Comp Sci by education but
I do work for medical people. And by their reckoning, you're in
no trouble unless you decide to munch on the thumb rest.

If you don't want the unsightly green, the best thing to do is to
coat the thumb rest with some clear nail polish (or pink or electric
blue, I'm not judgemental). Apply a couple of coats. It will seal
without damaging either the metal, or your thumb.
