I have collected recordings of the Mozart clarinet concerto sort-of
as a hobby. I currently have over 80 different recordings of this
one piece. I know -- that's either bizarre or a waste of money or
incredibly clever.

Anyway, my evaluation of the Marcellus version: this probably has
the most flawless technique, greatest control and eveness of sound
(very pleasing to American clarinetists' preferences), and
smoothest, most "serene" performance of all the recordings. I think
it should be listened to by all serious clarinetists. Is it the
*best* recording? This now involves personal biases. For some this
recording may be too ethereal -- it lacks the "fire" of other
performances. Also, as was typical when it was recorded in the
1960s, it was on "A" clarinet, but not basset clarinet. What other
versions would I recommend? I'm thinking about that. Maybe I'll
make some written evaluations. I could put out a list of the
recording I have.

A couple of years ago I was talking to John Bruce Yeh (he plays
some of the most interesting cadenzas) and he admitted to having
40+ versions of the Mozart concerto. At the time I had 70+. I think
the Marcellus version is still available on CD. Get it. He will be
remembered as one of the greatest clarinetists in the world while
he was playing with the Cleveland Orchestra.
