I have read with interest the discussion of C clarinets, and now the recent
thread on Penzel-Muller clarinets. I have a Penzel-Muller C which I got from my
father many years ago. It seems he was involved with an American Legion band in
Casper Wyoming in the mid to late '30's and played oboe parts on this horn. The
band folded and he ended up with the instrument.

I actually started in Junior High band on this instrument, also playing from the
oboe book. I was actually rather embarrassed -- kids don't like to be
different from their peers -- at least I didn't in 1962 -- and I wanted a Bb
like everyone else. Now I treasure it for a number of reasons, including its
practicality. It plays reasonably in tune (with a Bb mouthpiece), although it
blows unevenly as one goes higher in the clarion register.

My question is whether anyone out there can give me a hint of its age or any
other info beyond that which has already been stated concerning Penzel Muller
clarinets. The keys are a standard Boehm system with a third ring on the upper
joint. It has serial number 111561 on the upper and lower joint. Stamped on
the top joint are the words "Pat. appl'd.for L.P with a C above an eagle just
above the Penzel Muller & Co. New York oval logo.
