We're doing a Nelhybel piece in the wind ensemble at Southern Methodist
University right now. Our first reading of it was yesterday afternoon,
and many of the players did recognize his name, but went no deeper than
to joke about how funny it looked. The music is "Trittico", an energetic
fanfare-type piece, and while I think it's a little too simplistic for
this ensemble, it is an inspiring piece to play. There's a lengthy
and terrific bassoon & bass clarinet duet (in unison) in the 3rd movement (I
believe), staccato, with a profusion of dynamic and rhythmic accents. No
wonder Bill Page derived inspiration from Nelyel's music, with such energy
in the writing.
