I have a Buffet Academy Model too, serial #73353. The keys appear to be
nickel plated with a copper underneath. Yes, the keys are a bit worn. I
had it overhauled last month. The repairman discovered that it has a
smaller bore than an R-13. To me, it lacks the warmth, colors and resonance
of my R-13. It's sound strikes me as more compact and "focused" (Yes,
there's that undefined word again.). Whether that's generally true or
specific only to my particular clarinets, I would be interested in finding
out. Perhaps it's the nature of a smaller bore. Just guessing, I suspect
the Academy Model was intended as a top line student horn, as opposed to a
professional instrument. I too would be interested in finding out more
about it. My research of the archives reveals more questions than answers.
