For the past 10 years I have had the privilege of playing clarinet, bass
clarinet, and now contrabass clarinet with the Caltech/Occidental College
Wind Ensemble (now called the Concert Band) composed of Caltech & Occidental
students, professors, JPL scientists, and us "community" players. While
director and Los Angeles-based free lance trumpet player Bill Bing does
"audition" students, it's more to ensure they know which end of the horn to
play into so they're not embarassed at the first rehearsal. His cellist wife
Dolores coaches upwards of 30 (a guess) chamber ensembles at Caltech each
year. Bill's two jazz bands play regularly in the local clubs (pubs), have
cut a CD, and we're now cutting a CD with the Concert Band. Several years
ago, at our annual Bandorama, we had Eddie Daniels as our guest artist doing
the Weber Concertino and the Solfeggio from his CD. Bottom line, the
admission standards might be a bit stiff, but once in Caltech, you'll get a
chance to play!
