I don't know what the jazz players and afficionados think of Kenny
Davern, but Piotr's comment reminded me of an incident including Eddie
Daniels and KD at the 1978 Clarinet conference in Toronto.

Eddie Daniels was set for a session at 4 in the afternoon, and KD was in
the audience. ED invited KD to the stage for a tune or two, and in
trading fours, it became apparent that a competition had ensued. Davern
kept "pushing the envelope" for speed, tessitura, and imagination, and
while Eddie Daniels was certainly able to keep up, it was Davern who was
defining the musical direction of the solos. For me, it was a memorable
musical moment.
