I've been playing utility (bass-3rd-contra-whatever) bass in orchestras for
over 30 years and the use of contra is VERY rare. We used it for Ernest
Bloch's Schelomo but I think it was a transcription of a contrabassoon part,
which seems to be the only rare instance I can think of. We don't play alot
of VERy contemporary music, but even there it is very rare. In talking to
some of these composers, they often don't even know that such a thing exists
and have no clue as to what key(s) they're in. The greatest use of contra
I've seen is in clarinet choirs--also the best--they really add alot to the
sound.

I'm still looking for a Penzel-Mueller pressure plate ligature. Are they
available anywhere?
