I'm not exactly up on my Plastic trivia either but I can remember
my Grandfather telling me about some instrument trials that one of
the instrument makers did. As I recall they invited him along with
several other clarinetists from the Navy Band to try out their new
line of plastic/resin clarinets. This would place the time frame
between 1925 and 1950. As I recall he was less than overjoyed with
the results. The trials were behind a screen on horns that the
players just picked up. The results? were that the plastic instruments
were as good as comparable wood ones. He didn't feel that that
really held up in the actual use of the instrument. The moral of the
story: Always beware of pollsters, there are many ways to skew results.
