Someone has already mentioned that where you go to college is the
key. When I attending the University of California at Riverside in
the late 1960s, there weren't any performance majors on wind
instruments. So it wasn't very hard have the chance to play in the musical
groups.

The downside was that they weren't very good. My college wind
ensemble was not as good as the excellent high school band I was in.
However, we did have a lot fun. I played second clarinet for a while
and then played first alto saxophone my last year. You could
never do that at a school with a big music program.
