Brad,
You must have an asbestos sport coat or a tux of armor. I do aggree
with you. Tone color should be looked at in the same light as a persons
style of dress. We might not aggree with how someone dresses but would
never dismiss them based on dress.
I might not want a players tonal concept, but that doesn't mean
that it's not good - it's just not for me. I try and get by that and
listen to the music.
Steve does have a "bright" sound (I heard him last summer in
recital in Oklahoma) to my taste, but that doesn't make it bad. His
musical and technical ability were superb.
I do aggree that a "dark" sound is harder to push off stage into
the hall. Can any physics people out there comment on the energy in the
sound of a "bright" tone to that of a "dark" tone and if this is why the
bright seems to project better to the back wall.
