Actually, it seems more likely that French composers who late in life
decide to write sonatas for each of oboe, clarinet and bassoon are
sealing their fates even more surely than just those who write for
clarinet. Saint-Saens wrote sonatas op. 166 (oboe), 167 (clarinet) and
168 (bassoon). Poulenc wrote oboe and clarinet, but croaked before he
got to the bassoon piece he had intended. Go figure.
