Neil,
I played a friend's Hammerschmidt (German system) bass clarinet
with low C while I was in Vienna a couple of years ago. The price of that
horn at the time was about $25,000 US and had a wait of 1-2 years.
In the US we have always thought of the German key system as the
Oehler system. While in Vienna, my friend, Roger Salander, said to me that
Oehler was just a particular clarinet maker and that the correct
description is just German system. The Oehler system is based on the
M@-----. Oskar Oehler of Berlin took the M=FCller system, the ext=
ra
key additions that Robert Stark and Carl Baermann added to the M=FCller
system and came up with his own system. With the German clarinet there are
numerous additional keys that can be ordered (like the full conservatory
oboe key system). If anyone knows more, please add on.

Dan
