As Dan L. pointed out a while ago, Cahuzac made a classic recording of the
Hindemith concerto on which he used a traditional French clarinet and sounded
as French as anyone could (though I don't think DL *quite* put it like that!).
I had thought somewhat similarly to yourself on this topic, after I had heard
this recording myself, I had to change my mind somewhat.
