When Marcellus gave his Summer masterclasses, he would spend an evening near
the end of the week playing and discussing recordings of the clarinetists who
he felt were a big influence on him as he developed his tone concept. Clark
Brody would be there too, t o add his comments. Recordings of Clark Brody and
Marcellus himself would conclude the retrospective, to show the culmination
of their own concepts of sound.

The retrospective as it was the last time it was played (I was the "engineer"
for the last two summer classes) included the following players (in the
approximate order they appeared, I am relying on memory):

Daniel Bonade
Simeon Bellison
Robert Lindemann
Louis DeSantis
Ralph McClane
Walter Thalin
Clark Brody
Robert Marcellus

I think that's it. Now many of these artists can be found on CDs if one knows
where and how to look. Back then( only 5 or 6 years ago), they were much
rarer. The Louis DeSantis recording (THrough The Looking Glass by Deems
Taylor) never made it to LP and is the rarest of the bunch if you can't play
78s. One could probably hear it at the NYPL at Lincoln Center since they have
Deems Taylor's personal record collection there. It's worth the trip since
DeSantis had a beautiful sound and made few records. His (DeSantis's)
recording of Rachmaninoff second was reissued in the Cleveland ORchestra's
75th anniversary collection, but he is rather hard to hear on it, due to the
distant miking of that particilar recording.

Any other questions about old-time clarinet recordings?
