Regarding Ginny Lyon's request for info on Eddie Daniels' recording of the
Brahms Quintet:

The call number is indeed Reference Records RR 40CD ,with the Composers
String Quartet. Sound-wise the CD is first-rate. The string quartet is a
bit scrappy in its playing and intonation, but Daniels gives a strong, if a
bit unidiomatic, performance of
the Brahms. The tempi seem pushed, especially the 2nd movement.

The Weber Quintet is another matter. Being a really bravura piece, Eddie 's
playing and technique is really flawless. Only in the final movement does
the ensemble fall apart somewhat. The quartet is really not up to the
ferocious tempo, and Daniels is sometimes forced to play catch up with the
ensemble.

All things considered (catchy, no?), buy the CD. Eddie's playing - both
sound and technique - is never less than first-rate. All on the same
mouthpiece he uses for his jazz work. I've heard him live on a couple
occasions, and am really spell-bound with is artistry and flexibility in any
style of playing.
