That's a definite possibility, quite likely in fact. Although Gilbert was
the primary humorous one of the duo. Another possibility is that someone
changed the key to adapt to one of the singers, and someone naively (or
humorously) followed the rules by rote to change the clarinet part. I
suppose any Gilbert and Sullivan player should see the humor of such things.
