Peter,
I also play on a Pyne mouthpiece on Bass Cl. Have you tried double
lip on that area? I sometimes will use double lip on the middle B & C to
get the pitch down, but normally I use a relaxed single lip. It might be a
hair line leak in a pad sealing. Have you talked to David Bourque (bass
with Toronto Sym)? He's on the clarinet list otherwise I can give you his
e-mail. Maybe see if he could check it out. Bass clarinets are pretty
tempermental beasts (even the best ones). David would also know the best
repair person for bass cls.

P.S.
The Cambridge companion is a great book. I read the bass clarinet
chapter and was amazed that "On the Trail" and the solo in W. Schuman's
Sym. 3 weren't mentioned. I know that the book has an English slant on
things, but no "On the Trail"? Otherwise it's a great book.
