Dear Clarinettists,

Well, after reading the list now for about a fortnight I have decided to be
brave enough to 'introduce' myself! I have especially enjoyed the episodes
of the 'Dan and Dan' show! Dan Leeson's comment "With thinking like that,
we would all be playing with the reed on top" (The Dan and Dan Show, March
13th) highlighted that much of what 'we' as clarinettists do is a matter of
taste (or 'performance practice', if you like!).

Anyway, I am six months into a Ph.D. in early clarinet performance practice
at The University of Sheffield. My supervisor and teacher is Dr. Colin
Lawson (if you haven't heard his Mozart Concerto, you haven't lived! - its
on Nimbus CD 5228, with The Hanover Band). My Ph.D. involves an intensive
practical study of various clarinets. At present I am playing a Bangham
copy of a pair of c.1790 6-keyed Tauber Viennese instruments. In addition,
I am researching the influence of clarinet reed-position on composers and
repertoire before 1880, with particular emphasis on the 'reed-above'
embouchure. Consequently I was very interested to read Dan Leeson's passing
reference to the 'reed-above' embouchure.

I should be delighted to hear from anyone who knows anything at all about
'reed-above'; I believe that Italian clarinettists still played that way
during the early part of this century. And before I sign off, I should add
that I am actually an Australian, hence the title of this transmission!

Many thanks and may all your reeds be fantastic,
Ingrid Elizabeth Pearson
