Re Schubert 9: I must admit that, having no C, when our orchestra played this a
while ago, I played the whole thing on the B flat. The outer movements must be
easier to play on the C, apart from anything else, at least for a player who is
used to the instrument. There would certainly be a contrast between the sounds
of the C and the A, which is another good reason for using it if you've got it.
There seems no good reason to suppose that Schubert could *not* have wanted
such a contrast. The actual sounds produced from the modern instruments are no
doubt rather different from what Schubert expected, though ...
