May I add my bit to the C clarinet discussion, this time from the
standpoint of composer. Previously I have stated my views on this subject
as a player.
Over the years I have done a good bit of writing for orchestra -
originals and arrangements. Occasionally the choice of clarinet depends
upon range - when you need a low C#, there's not much option. When I write
in keys which have lots of sharps in the sounding key, I tend to use the A
clarinet also for purposes of ease of playing. Mostly I write for the Bb
clarinet out of habit.
The thing is this: If the specific instrument or changing from one
instrument to the other is a problem, I would much rather have the music
played IN TUNE. I care much more about intonation than I do about the
very subtle differences in the sound of the soprano clarinets, which by
the way, may well be different with each new reed you choose. Some days I
can tell the difference in the Bb and the A clarinet...some days I can't.
I just want the music played rhythmically and IN TUNE. After that I really
don't care which clarinet you use. Make your life easier...use the one
which enables you to do the best job.
