I learned to transpose by playing along with my father (him on piano, me on
clarinet or sax). Regardless of what I was playing, he always made me do the
transposing, although with he was more proficient at it that I was. ("I've
got lots more notes to play," he'd say.)

Learning to read alternate clefs for bassoon and viola helped me to transpose
better, as well. But I've rarely seen formal incidents from an academic
standpoint where transposition was taught.
