Dan's discussion of the difficulties in playing an E-flat clarinet imply that
starting with an E-flat could cause the child to become discouraged before
getting to a larger horn. I can't speak to that wwith experience, because
I've never gone higher than B-flat/C, and was always more successful on alto,
bass, and lower saxophones. (different thread, but I think it's harder for
men to _hear_ the higher reeds -- flame me if you will)

However, my daughter had a hard time trying to get her mouth around a regular
(B-44) mouthpiece and trying to handle the weight/keys of my B-flat until she
was about 12. I started her with soprano recorder, instead.
