John,
Why don't you start your daughter out on the soprano recorder and
piano. The fingering movements that she would learn on the recorder can
easily be transfered to any woodwind instrument - and no reed/mouthpiece
problems! Piano skills (including music fundamentals) for a younger child
are much more important than learning reed adjusting and other clarinet
skills. Wait a couple of years till her hands and wind capacity has grown
and then do the clarinet. I always regret not having had piano lessons
when I was a kid. Learning piano from scratch in college is no fun.
