I have the opportunity to get what appears to be a clarinet in D. In
25 years of amateur clarinet playing through high school bands, college
wind ensemble, community bands and orchestras, community theater pit
orchestras I have run across Eb, C, Bb, A, alto, bassett, bass and contra
parts, but never a D part. I think this is pitched in D; when I
borrowed an electronic tuner to check it out, it either played a
bit sharp as a D clarinet, or very flat as a Eb. Also, I've never
been able to play Eb very well due to the keys being so close together, but
this instrument is very comfortable for me to play.
The instrument is a Selmer (Paris) with silver plated keys, it is
in excellent condition, no cracks, and has what to me is a very nice sound.
the serial number is B7110. The instrument measures 17 7/8 inches from
top of barrel to bottom of bell.
Anyone know when this might have been made, has anything been
written for it, and is it an instrument of any value? Besides being
fun to play, I am considering buying this as a small instrument in case
one of my small children shows a interest in learning clarinet. If the
string players can start on 1/4 and 1/2 size instruments, why not wind
players?
Any information or insight on this instrument is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
