Stan Geidel and David Niethamer have written about clarinet tone in
orchestras with the view that the important things are to play in tune and
with good rhythm and to be concerned about the music rather than clarinet
technique and tone.

My teacher once asked me to play a job with him. I was flattered beyond
comprehension as this man was a professional in the Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra. He had filled in with Chicago years ago, including in recordings.
This could be a long story, but, the bottom line is that I was the only
person out of 25 who was not a professional and not a member of the RPO.

After the job, I asked him why he had the confidence to ask me to play with
this group. He replied that I played in tune and that I played musically. I
never thought about it at the time, but he made no mention of my tone.
