Jim,
Of course I have to disagree with your points. I'm not saying that
clarinet tone is of no importance. Professional players know what they
want to sound like and how to produce that tone color. There is a wide
variation of tone colors that are profesionally acceptable from hearing
live orchestras and numerous recordings.
The best tone in the world won't win an audition if the intonation,
rythym, musical sense (what's going on in the orchestra in this excerpt),
or musical phrasing are lacking. A player with all of the above and an
acceptable tone would advance farther in an audition than one with any one
of those qualities missing but having a beautiful tone color.
