Stan,
I'm in total agreement with you. I didn't learn the two most
important things in playing until 8 years ago. I still like to quiz other
players and students on the two most important things - they will all say
tone and technique. Most conductors aren't clarinetist so their main
concern is - does it sound like a clarinet, is it in tune, is it the right
note at the right time.
Clarinetist are like dogs - sometimes only they can hear things in
the tone of a clarinetist.
