Mark-

I would try to get as many clarinets that you can get your hands on to try
individually. Every instrument is going to play a little differently (even
the same make & model) so the more that you can try the better the chances
that you/your son can find one that you/he likes.

You might be able to get a few on loan from a local music store. Or maybe
through a music teacher at school or a private clarinet teacher.

As for brands- I don't know I'd try a few different ones just to compare and
contrast.

*Make sure that your son uses the same mouthpiece on the A as he does for his
Bb. Almost always the person will use the same mp for the two horns. In
fact, you will probably want to have the Bb handy so you can compare the two
clarinets to one another during the trials.
