Fellow clarinet enthusiasts,

I'm trying to become a "coach" to my son, and in doing so I've come
to the appreciation that I know very little about what you're all
really talking about regarding clarinet sounds & styles, most probably
because I don't play any woodwind instrument. In order to become
educated, I'm willing to set up a Web and mailable page of clarinet
discography. If any of you would mail me your personal choices of
recordings to listen to and WHY you consider them important, I'll
catalog them & build the Web page. I'd like to become educated,
and the least I could do is keep a page updated. Negative along with
positive comments would be educational, such as "listening to the
(horrible/wonderful) vibrato made the recording (nauseous/pleasurable)"
(See, I've learned something from this list already ;^) I keep hearing
about German/French/American styles and sounds - how about some
references to seminal recordings?

Also, I have not seen much discussion on jazz clarinetists (I haven't
searched the archives yet, though). I love listening to Artie Shaw
anytime, and I tend to forget that it's a clarinet he's playing (he
seems so at one with his instrument) but I don't know anything about
the difficulties involved, along with comparisons to classical playing
and such.

Thanks,
--
