Klarinet Archive - Posting 000176.txt from 1996/03

I just got the latest issue of "The Clarinet" magazine (the
one with Abe Most on the cover) and found in it a ballot
for officers of the I.C.A. In the magazine were biographies
of the various candidates.

Now, I won't be able to resist voting for our own Bob Spring
as president-elect, but what about the others? The biographies
are merely resumes; should I vote for one candidate over another
because s/he has studied with more "name" teachers or plays in
a better-known orchestra? Should I pick the ones who have
more appealing photographs?

My guess is that people apply for these positions out of some
combination of desire to serve the clarinet community and
to improve their academic resumes for tenure decisions. (I
once met a member of the Chicago Chamber Brass quintet who
told me that he had joined the group for exactly that second
reason--how disillusioning.) The outcome seems mostly
meaningless to me but probably very important to the
candidates.

Any comments on how to make a decision like this?

Claudia
