My College clarinet teacher (James East = Fredonia) taught me the best
exercise for woodshedding.
Take the problem phrase and change the rhythm.Ex: that last page is full of
sextuplets. Change the rhythms to something like dotted 8th+ 16th notes (I
wish I could draw notes here).Keep playing until you get up to the tempo you
want the original to be. And then reverse it (16th + dotted 8th) . Then try
quadruplets (grouping in 4 instead of 6). And so on . Of course it will not
work out evenly and you will have extra notes. Once you have tried a few
patterns and feel that those rhythms are even and OK try the passage up to
speed. This little exercise has helped me in a lot of problems spots. Not all
, and that's ok, but enough times that I feel confident someone will benefit
from this advice.
Good luck and break a reed!!
