It is, as you first stated, Ligeti "-split". That isn't, though, his families
original name. It is in fact, a made-up name. His family was Jewish and
from Transylvania/Romania/Hungary (the boarders were constantly changing in
that particular area around the turn of the century and onward) and at that
time it was beneficial for jews to change their names to gain some advantages
they were not allowed.
