Thanks to Dr Monson and John Morrison for the advice on getting started
on my new basset horn. I have found one book called The Basset Horn and
it's Music. I assume this was the book referred to by Dr Monson. It
will take me a while to get this book on interloan so in the mean time I
would like to find out more about repertoire for this instrument from the
klarinet community.
I am aware of the Mozart Gran Partita and the Requiem, and Mendelson's
2 Concert pieces. Can anyone recommend a piece(s) for piano and basset
horn ? Also are there any orchestral pieces requiring basset horn. I
have also become aware that the mozart Quintet and Concerto have been
played and recorded with basset horn. I am puzzled about how this is
done as it presumably means playing them transposed from the original key
we are so familiar with.
I am fortunate enough to have made contact with another basset horn
player in Brisbane so there may be an opportunity to play the Gran
Partita some day. Brisbane is a city of about 1 million people and there
are 3 basset horns there. I don't know how many are in Australia but
it's interesting to be one of only a handful of people in this country
who own one and to be able to say one is a basset hornist and to note the
predictable reaction of people who have never heard of a basset horn (99%
of people) Thanks in advance for any further advice.
